Introduction

This Website has been built up over the years as a series of meeting reports and patient stories. Inevitably this has resulted in its being difficult to find information on any particular aspect of GIST and its treatment. The following are a series of abstracts and links to the relevant sections of the various meeting reports.

Getting Best Supportive Care

A talk by Dr Michelle Scurr, Consultant Oncologist at The Royal Marsden, on the latest approaches to the treatment of GIST given in London in October 2010.

Question and answer session

Patients' questions answered by Dr Mike Leahy and Dr Bill Newman in Manchester in May 2008. Questions included questions on diet and mutational testing.

The role of surgery in the treatment of GIST

A talk by Mr Satvinder Mudan and Mr Evangelos Efthimiou workshop given at the patient meeting in London on 25th october 2007. The talk was accompanied by slides showing the resection of GISTs.

The Role of the CNS

A workshop led by Judith Robinson on what we should expect from the Clinical Nurse Specialist (London on 22/10/10).

GIST Patient Guide

This 100-page book, with many illustrations, was published by Das Lebenshaus in 2008 and subsequently translated into English. It gives a very good description of what a GIST is and how it can be treated. It may be read on screen or printed out.

Talk on adjuvant treatment of GIST with imatinib

In this talk, given at the 2008 patient information meeting in Sheffield, Professor Penella Woll dicusses the EORTC Adjuvant Imatinib trial and the eligibility criteria for entry into the trial (now closed). Her talk was followed by an interesting question and answer session.

The role of pathology in the identification and treatment of GIST

A talk by Dr David Hughes given to our Sheffield Meeting in May 2008. Dr Hughes' talk was followed by a very interesting question and answer session.

The role of NICE in the treatment of GIST.

A talk by Roger Wilson given at our Manchester meeting in 2009 explaining the way in which NICE appraises new treatments. He also referred to the NICE "Improving Outcomes Guidance for the Treatment of Sarcoma" which was published in 2006 but which had not yet been fully implemented across the country.

Living with Uncertainty.

A talk by Dr Dominic Bray given at our Manchester meeting in 2009. Dr Bray is a clinical psychologist and in his talk he offered strategies, both for patients and carers, for coping with the emotional stress of an unwelcome diagnosis or prognosis. His session was followed by questions and a discussion.

Current research into GIST

A talk by Dr Mike Leahy given at our Manchester meeting in 2009 describing the current status of research into GIST. Dr Leahy's talk was followed by a question and answer session.

Managing Side-effects

A talk by Nick Duncan, pharmacist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham at our Birmingham meeting in 2010. In this presentation Nick Duncan talked about the common side-effects of imatinib, sunitinib and nilotinib, and suggested techniques for managing them.
